Frequently Asked Questions
The Supreme Court of Canada has recently ruled that medical marijuana patients have a right to possess and consume marijuana in any form, not just dried buds (as was previously the case). However, currently you cannot obtain extracts and edibles from within Health Canada’s federal program. We at Ocean Grown offer this service to our patients and will continue to do so.
In order to become a member at OGMS you need one of two things:
- A written proof of OGMS-approved condition from a licensed physician
- A prescription to use cannabis from a licensed physician
In addition, we have a licenced nurse practicioner who, in conjunction with a physician, can do a consult and determine whether or not marijuana is a suitable medicine to alleviate your condition.
Membership at OGMS is free.
Our hours of operation are 8 am until 8 pm, 7 days a week. It is a City of Victoria bylaw that we are not permitted to sell any product past 8pm.
Our membership card is generally held in high regard among other dispensaries in Victoria and the Lower Mainland. That being said, it is up to each dispensary to decide whether or not our card is sufficient proof of a medical condition that requires cannabis.
Phoenix tears are a type of cannabis oil developed and popularised by Rick Simpson, and heralded as an effective treatment for cancer, wasting disease, chronic pain, insomnia, and epilepsy. The oil is made by using either an alcohol or fat based solvent extraction, and then the solvent is distilled. At OGMS our selection of Phoenix tears consists of different ratios and concentrations of THC and CBD to cater to a variety of patient needs. The oil is packaged in 1 gram units in syringes, and is used by depressing the syringe plunger onto a piece of food.
At OGMS, we pride ourselves in working diligently to offer quality, consistent, and safe medicine to our members. We try very hard to make sure that our suppliers adhere to a rigid set of values, including the use of only organic nutrients and sustainable cultivation techniques.
CBD and THC are two of the at least 85 different cannabinoids that are found in the cannabis plant. While they are derived from the same plant, they have different properties and uses. The first thing to note is that THC is psychoactive, whereas CBD is not.
Tetrahydrocannibinol — THC — or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the chemical responsible for most of marijuana’s psychological effects. It acts much like the cannabinoid chemicals made naturally by the body, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
Cannabinoid receptors are concentrated in certain areas of the brain associated with thinking, memory, pleasure, coordination and time perception. THC attaches to these receptors and activates them and affects a person’s memory, pleasure, movements, thinking, concentration, coordination, and sensory and time perception, according to NIDA.
Cannabidiol — CBD— is a cannabis compound that has significant medical benefits, but does not make people feel “stoned” and can actually counteract the psychoactivity of THC. The fact that CBD-rich cannabis doesn’t get one high makes it an appealing treatment option for patients seeking anti-inflammatory, anti-pain, anti-anxiety, anti-psychotic, and/or anti-spasm effects without troubling lethargy or dysphoria.
If you are new to using cannabis we would recommend that you first try to learn the appropriate dosage for you in the evening before bed. While it’s doubtful that cannabis will leave you incapacitated, we do not recommend operation a vehicle or machinery while using cannabis.
Sativa and Indica are the two major types of cannabis plants which can mix together to create hybrid strains. Each strain has its own range of effects on the body and mind resulting in a wide range of medicinal benefits.
Indica plants typically grow short and wide, compared to Sativa plants which grow tall and thin. Indica plants are better suited for indoor growing because of their short growth and sativa plants are better suited for outdoor growing because some strains can reach over 25 ft. in height.
The high produced from smoking Indica bud is a strong physical body high that will make you sleepy or ‘couch-locked’ and provides a deep relaxation feeling compared to a Sativa high, which is known to be more energetic and uplifting.
